Language Arts

My major area is Language Arts. My favorite educational websites are interactive and really get the students involved, and enjoying learning.

I found the website http://www.gamequarium.com/languagearts.htm. I really liked this website, because it engages the students into games that help reinforce all the areas they should be learning. Such as, sentence structure, spelling, parts of speech, ect. 

http://www.kidsknowit.com/educational-songs/index.php?topic=Language%20Arts This website features important topics put into songs. This website would be great for the students that learn best through music and rhythm. 

Brainpopjr.com (k-3) and brainpop.com are both great resources for all subject areas. They have videos and interactive games that have feature characters. For language arts they have a reading and writing section. I remember going on both of these websites in elementary school, and I loved it. 

http://ivyjoy.com/fables/index.shtml This website was filled with tons of fables and fairy tales. Letting the children explore and figure out what genres they like to read is super important. This website might really speak to some children.

http://www.eduplace.com/kids/hme/k_5/index.html I think this website, because it was made by Houghton Mifflin, who makes a lot of textbooks. They have little quizzes on it to help the student get thinking about different language arts areas.

http://www.squiglysplayhouse.com/WritingCorner/StoryBuilder/index.html This website is a lot like mad libs. It gives you a little background information about the story, but you get to build the rest of it by imputing different parts of speech. This helps the children get familiar with using different words and using a lot of expressive language in their writing.

http://www.kidsreads.com/ Gets kids excited about reading. They feature books of the month, and have a bunch of lists to show different genres and series. Children can look through and find books that appeal to them. 

http://www.iknowthat.com/com/L2?GradeLevel=-1:6&Subject=Language+Arts  Basically, every topic covered in language arts is in this website. There are games for pre-k all the way to sixth grade. There are quizzes, games, worksheets, and puzzles to keep the students attention.

http://www.essaypunch.com/ This website is for upper el all the way to high school seniors. It takes the kids through the steps of writing an essay. A lot of people struggle with this, so I think this would be a handy website for those students.

http://bookadventure.com/Home.aspx This website is a great tool for students. They can read stories, take quizzes about what they read, and earn prizes. This will help motivate children to read more and more.

These websites are great supplemental tools for the classroom or even at home. Sending home a list of educational websites will help extend what they are doing in the classroom to home. Most kids spend time on the computer throughout the day, so why not play educational games that will help out with school work.
